- Step 1
Focus on your timing, a simple training tip to always remember. If your timing is bad it will make it much more difficult to train your dog. The best trainers that I see are the ones who have excellent timing. Try to reward your dog within a split second of the behavior occurring.
- Step 2
Be consistent with your training. This may sound simple, but if you have more than one person in your house there is a good chance that your dog is getting mixed signals. If one person in the house commands "Off" when the dog jumps and the next person invites the dog to jump up, the dog is going to get confused.
- Step 3
Training will be much more successful if your dog understands that you are the leader. Dogs are social animals and they respond to a social structure. The faster your dog learns that you are the leader, the easier the training will be
- Step 4
It is much easier to train a dog that get enough exercise. Give your dog plenty of exercise on a daily basis. A dog with too much pent up energy is very difficult to train and control. When your dog gets enough exercise it will be easier for your dog to live with you and easier for you to live with your dog.
- Step 5
Use high-powered treats. Dogs have favorite foods just like we do. Find out what your dog's favorite treats are and use them to train your dog. You'll get a much better response and training will be a lot more fun.
- Keep training sessions short and fun.
- Have everyone in the house help out.
- Never train when you are stressed or tired.
